Bugatti Veyron Super Sport Sets Speed Record
- 07.08.2010 - Article Number: 8

The Bugatti Super Sport. The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport recently ran a two-way average of 267.86 miles per hour.

The ludicrously fast 1001-horsepower Bugatti Veyron 16.4 has become even faster.

Here is the new Veyron Super Sport with its four enlarged turbochargers and super-size intercoolers pushing the output of the 8-liter W-16 engine to stupefying 1,200-horsepower. And it’s already broken a speed record for a production car, with a two-way average speed of 267.86 miles per hour.

The record run, certified by the German government and the Guinness Book of World Records, took place a couple of weeks ago at the Volkswagen Group’s giant Ehra-Lessein proving grounds in Germany. VW owns the Bugatti brand.

The new speed record is a bit more than 14 miles an hour better than what the regular Veyron 16.4 ran under similarly strict circumstances at Ehra-Lessein in 2005. More importantly to Bugatti, 267.86 m.p.h. exceeds the previous Guinness-certified two-way average run of 256.18 m.p.h. made on a closed stretch of Highway 221 in rural Washington State by the 1,183-horsepower Shelby SuperCars Ultimate Aero in 2007.

1 FASTEST car in the world
- 07.03.2010 - Article Number: 7

252mph, 1001PS, 16 cylinders, four turbos, 8.0-litres... the Veyron's numbers are staggering. It can hit 60mph in 2.5 seconds thanks to four-wheel-drive traction, shoots to 125mph in 7.3 seconds and reaches 200mph in less than 20. The Veyron 16.4 is the most powerful, most expensive, and fastest street-legal production car in the world , with a proven top speed of over 400 km/h (407 km/h or 253 mph top speed). The obvious question: Why would anyone build such a car? Surely no one sees doing 250 mph on the highway. There can be no commercial logic behind such a crazy machine, even with the Veyron's price tag of one million euros (at the current exchange rate, that's $1.2 million). Not even as a "halo model" -- a reputation booster -- for the VW group that builds it does the Veyron make sense. No Bugatti owner wants it known he's driving a Volkswagen.

Bugatti Veyron
Base Price 1,000,000 euros (1,300,000 USD)
Power 1000 hp
Zero to 60 mph 2.5 s
Zero to 100 mph 6 s
Top speed 253 mph (407 km/h)

Bugatti Veyron Development of the Veyron began with the 1999 EB 18/4 "Veyron" concept car . Introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show , it was similar in design and appearance to the final Veyron production car. One major difference was the EB 18/4's use of a W18 engine with three banks of six cylinders. The Veyron was designed by Hartmut Warkuss of Volkswagen rather than Giorgetto Giugiaro of ItalDesign who had handled the three prior Bugatti concepts.

Development continued throughout 2001 and the EB 16/4 Veyron was promoted to "advanced concept" status. In late 2001 Bugatti announced that the car, officially called the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 , would go into production in 2003. The car experienced significant problems, however. High-speed stability was difficult, with one prototype destroyed in a crash and another spun out during a press demonstration at the Monterey Historics event in Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca . Production of the Veyron was delayed indefinitely.

After the release of the car, it has become known that while each Veyron is being sold for £840,000, the production costs of the car are approximately £5 million per vehicle. As Bugatti, and therefore Volkswagen, are making such a huge loss, it has been likened by influential journalist Jeremy Clarkson to Concorde ; both are largely impractical experiments in technology and ground-breaking performance created just to prove that it could be done. A car the like of the Bugatti Veyron may not be seen in production again for some time to come, if at all.

Bugatti Veyron engineThe Veyron features a W16 engine —16 cylinders in 4 banks of 4 cylinders, or the equivalent of two narrow-angle V8 engines mated in a vee configuration. Each cylinder has 4 valves , for a total of 64, but the narrow V8 configuration allows two camshafts to drive two banks of cylinders so only 4 camshafts are needed. The engine is fed by four turbochargers , and it displaces 8.0 L (7,993 cm³/488 in³) with a square 86 by 86 mm bore and stroke.

The Veyron's 16-cylinder engine is based on the innovative "W" design introduced in the 2003 Volkswagen Passat. The Veyron's version features two 90-degree V8s offset by 15 degrees. The offset allows each cylinder to be placed close to its neighbor, which reduces the total size of the massive 8.0-liter engine. A Formula 1?style dry-sump lubrication system keeps the engine moving smoothly. It's easier to spin many small turbochargers than one or two large ones, so Bugatti employs four turbos to reduce boost lag. The strategy works: The engine creates 922 lb.-ft. of torque at only 2,200 rpm.

inside Bugatti Veyron Putting this power to the ground is a dual-clutch DSG computer-controlled manual transmission with 7 gear ratios via shifter paddles behind the steering wheel. Or it can be driven by full automatic transmission. The Veyron also features full-time all wheel drive , necessary given the output of the engine. It uses special Michelin PAX System run-flat tires, which had to be designed specifically for the Veyron, and which are capable of running at 402 km/h (253 mph).
The car's wheelbase is 2700 mm (106.3 in). Overall length is 4466 mm (175.8 in). It measures 1998 mm (78.7 in) wide and 1206 mm (47.5 in) tall. Curb weight is expected to reach 4300 lb (1950 kg) with a power to weight ratio of 513.3 hp per ton (metric) or 4.36 lb/hp (SAE).The Bugatti Veyron has a total of 10 radiators

Fastest speed for a car driven blindfolded
- 06.25.2010 - Article Number: 6

On 2 March 2010, Metin Şentürk, a popular Turkish folk singer, was acknowledged as the new Guinness World Records™ record holder in the category for the fastest speed for a car driven blindfolded.

Mr Şentürk was presented with his certificate at ŞanlıUrfa Airport, ŞanlıUrfa, Turkey, under the warm spring sunshine, which made the day more pleasant for everyone in attendance.

From the number of people involved in the record attempt, I could clearly see that this was a well organized and dedicated team that only had one aim – to beat the previous record of 269.28 km/h (167.32 mph), set by Mike Newman (UK) in a BMW M5 Saloon at Elvington Aerodrome, North Yorkshire, UK, on 11 October 2005. Being a fine English gentlemen, Mr Newman rang Mr Şentürk the night before his attempt on the record to wish him the best of luck. Encouraged by this great gesture, Metin was in excellent spirits on the day, smiling and talking to vast number of journalists without hesitation.

Mr Şentürk lost his sight at the age of 3, but this didn't stop him from becoming a famous singer and now the president of the World Handicapped Foundation, an organization he established to encourage people of different abilities to speak out and take up opportunities that they may not have considered before.

Another member of the team behind this record-breaking feat was Volkan Işık, a former rally driver and Mr Şentürk's coach.

The car of choice was the Ferrari F430 Scuderia. Mr Şentürk used a faster sports version of the car and another was used by Mr Işık, who instructed his folk-singing protégé via a radio link in their helmets. Mr Şentürk’s car’s speed was calculated with expert help and advice from Mark Hargreaves of Datron Technology (UK) using the MicroSat speed sensor – the guidelines for this record required an average speed calculated over two runs and measured to the nearest hundredth of km/h (mph).

The team had been practicing hard to break the record and their dedication paid off when on 31 March, Mr Şentürk managed an average speed of 292.89 km/h (182.03 mph) over two runs, thereby making him the new Guinness World Records™ record holder!

Acura to offer six-speed manual on 2010 TL
- 09.30.2008 - Article Number: 2

Most automotive purists believe a car must be offered with a manual transmission option to be considered a ‘true’ sports car, with many of today’s so-called sports sedans failing to meet this qualification. But purists fear not, as at least one sports sedan will be receiving its credentials for 2010.

Acura has announced that’s its all-new TL sedan will be offered with a six-speed manual transmission option for the 2010 model year. The manual transmission option is squarely aimed at performance drives and will be offered in both TL models – the base front-wheel drive car and the up-level SH-AWD model.

While some manual transmissions manage to free up a few extra ponies under the hood, the manually-equipped TLs will retain their 2009 ratings – 280 horsepower for the base car and 305 for the SH-AWD model.

But the six-speed manual should aid in the TL’s overall performance. The six-speed unit actually weighs 110 pounds less than the TL’s five-speed auto – which will soldier on in 2010 – and improves weight distribution from 59/41 front/back to 58/42, according to Motor Authority. Manual transmission cars will also benefit from Acura’s Hill-Assist program and an upgraded suspension with stiffer springs and dampers. The extra cog should also help out with slightly better fuel economy.

No official word on pricing but the 2010 Acura TL should hit dealers in the second part of 2009 with a starting price in the $35,000 neighborhood.
